(Answer) (Category) Home Automation FAQ : (Category) Wiring : (Category) RS-485 Networking :
My RS-485 network often dies after thunderstorms. Can I prevent this?
Yes, you can take steps to reduce the impact of lightening strikes on RS-485 networks. Because RS-485 networks tend to be very long, they are prone to picking up transients from nearby lightening strikes. The best way to try and protect your equipment is to replace your RS-485 transciever ICs with ESD protection.

Maxim has ESD versions of all their RS-458 chips which are pin compatible with most industry standard RS-485 ICs.

For 75176 ICs, I highly recommend the MAX485E or if you need slew-rate limiting, the MAX483E
