RS-485 Networking
RS-485 Networks are used in industrial control and various home automation systems. They are robust for use in harsh environments to transmit data at speeds approaching 10MBps though the speed are usually much slower.

They are useful since they are multi-drop networks where you can add nodes in a daisy chain configuration. If you need to add a node to an RS-485 network, find the closet cable carrying it and splice the module in.
