(Answer) (Category) Home Automation FAQ : (Category) HA Equipment : (Category) Creative Control Concepts/HCS-II : (Category) HCS-II Supervisory Controller :
How can I make a serial cable with a DB-9 connector on it?
Below is a pinout to connect the HCS to a DB-9 serial cable. I show all appropriate control lines connected since many PCs require them, but you may beable to get by with just Tx, Rx, GND, CTS, and DTR. Note that J2's pins are read 1-8 along the outer edge of the board (starting at the "1") and then back the other way for 9-16 on the inner row (with Pin 16 directly across from Pin 1)

HCS J2 DB-9 Signal Direction (HCS -- PC)
===================================================
  1        N/C
  2         3       HCS Rx           <---
  3         2       HCS Tx           --->
  4         7       RTS              <---
  5         8       CTS              --->
  6         6       DSR              --->
  7         5       Ground           <-->
  8        N/C      RLSD             --->
 20         4       DTR              --->

If you want to get away with a 4 wire cable between your PC and HCS-II, Tie DTR to RTS/CTS on both ends, or connect the Rx/Tx and DTR lines (4th wire is ground) and tie RTS & CTS together on the PC side. All other lines can be left disconnected.
