(Answer) (Category) Home Automation FAQ : (Category) Wiring :
How do you maintain a moisture barrier with a J-Box or Mud-Ring?
Is there such an animal that:
 A: A J-box for 110v that would maintain proper vapor barrier/air leakage?
B: Same thing for mud rings?
C: Any other suggestions for accomplishing this appreciated.
I saw these things on a home improvement show but have not seen them in any Home Depot like place. They are thin plastic boxes about 6 or 8" square and a couple inches deep. They attach to the stud, have cable holes on top and bottom and have a 1-2" flat surface around the front edge. The mud ring or J-Box mounts like normal on the stud, inside the square box. You then caulk the cables where they go through the square box (not the J-box). When the sheetrock is installed, you run a bead of caulk on the flat surface around the square box and put up the sheetrock, thus sealing the box to the rock. With this seal and the caulk around the wires, the hole in the sheetrock and the outlet or mudring is effectively sealed maintaining the moisture/air barrier.

Anyone else seen these around? They looked really neat.

One source for stuff like this is Shelter Supply (http://www.shelter-mn.com/) Look in their online catalog for Lessco (sp?) boxes.
