(Answer) (Category) Home Automation FAQ : (Answer) (missing or broken file) : (Category) X-10 Inc. : (Category) MS13A HawkEye/MS14A EagleEye Wireless Motion Detectors :
Can I power HawkEyes or EagleEyes with DC power?
Yes. Numerous users have mounted these sensors in locations that are not easy to get to. In their original form these sensors use 2 AAA batteries. The batteries usually last 6 months to a year or more. However, when the batteries die, a part of your automation setup goes offline. Many users have purchased 3V DC power supplies to feed power to the sensors instead of using batteries.

First, realize that any modification will void your warranty. Also, if you run the 3VDC over long distances, the voltage at the sensor may be less than 3VDC which may or may not affect the sensor's performance.

The bigger gauge wire that you use, the less voltage drop you will have over distances. While many folks use CAT5 which is 24 gauge, you might consider using 18 gauge alarm wire. Simply solder the red wire to teh positive battery terminal and the ground wire to the negative battery terminal OR, splice into the internal power wire connections in the sensor.
