Bay Networks Instant Internet |
|
The Bay Networks (ok NORTEL Networks) Instant Internet is an embedded PC running what looks like a Linux variant. The firewall is controlled via a PC client or a web browser.
There are two models, the 100 and 400. The 400 is just like the 100 except it adds 64MB of cache RAM for web caching and 100BaseT Ethernet interfaces. You can get numerous cards for the WAN/Internet side including ISDN, DSL, Ethernet, and many others. I use the II400 and am VERY happy with it. It has performed very well. This FAQ is fed through it. The IIs are pricey (The 100 is about $600), but well worth it given the protection they provide. The port mapping capability is excellent. It allows you to direct incoming traffic to a given port to a specific machine on your home network so you can have individual web servers, email servers, etc. The II400 web cache really speeds up web browsing for the entire household.
I give it 5 stars! The design team is also very helpful and is often found posting articles on comp.dcom.sys.bay-networks
